Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Using and Farming Recoats

As you level up you’ll gain skill points and attribute points, which you can spend to unlock new abilities and increase your attributes, respectively. Sometimes mistakes happen, what seems good at Lv10 might not be as useful at Lv50. Sometimes you just need a do-over. Fortunately in Clair Obsur: Expedition 33 has Recoats you can use to reset your spent skill points and attribute points, and this page will cover finding and using Recoats.

Can you farm Recoats?: Yes. Recoats can be dropped by normal enemies found in dungeons and on the world map, and with enough patience, you can accumulate as many as you wish, although they are rare drops and this may take quite a bit of time. They are functionally infinite, however.

Page Breakdown

Skill Points and Attribute Points

Every time you level up you will gain 1x Skill Point and 3x Attribute Points, and these can be expended at any expedition flag. Skills costs 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 skill points to unlock. This is quite a bit, all things considered, but you only can equip six skills, so picking a handful of situational skills (applying debuffs, buffs, healing, break skills, multi-hit skills, single-target punishers, etc) shouldn’t be too expensive, in the long run. Still, some skills aren’t revealed ahead of time, and even if they were you’ll find new weapons and recruit new companions who could change what builds you wish to pursue. Simply put, there’s a good chance you’ll want to adjust your skills at some point.

You will gain three attributes points every level, (left), and one skill point - both can be refunded by expending a Recoat. (right)

Attributes are more straight-forward - there are five attributes, each of which can be raised to 99. Some of these, like Vitality, are quite useful at the beginning, as 10-20 points can double the Health you have available, making the early-going much easier. 290 Health at 20 Vitality is a great boon early on, but 1389 Health at 99 Vitality is much less compelling late game when a single Pictos can give you 1,000-2,000 Health.

In both cases, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment or build for what works now, even if you have to respec later, as you can always just use a Recoat to refund any expended skill points or attribute points.

Recoat Uses and Locations

You can use Recoats at any expedition flag, when purchasing skills or attributes. Just hold down the DualSense-ButtonTriangle button and the skill/attribute points will be refunded. Note that using a Recoat will refund only skill points or attribute points, not both - if you want to refund both, you will have to use two Recoats, one on each of the skill/attribute screens.

You can find Recoats as motes of light when exploring, (left), or rarely earn them as battle spoils. (right)

Recoats can be found in several ways - they can be found as glowing motes of loot as you explore, they can be dropped by enemies, or they can be purchased from gestral merchants for 10,000 Chroma each. Bosses have a fair chance of dropping Recoats, but this is surprisingly not guaranteed. You can also get Recoats from normal enemies, either in dungeons or on the world map, and while the odds of getting such a drop are rare (we obtained three Recoats from normal enemies throughout the course of the game), the enemies don’t have to be strong to drop Recoats - we started seeing them drop in the Flying Waters dungeon and on the world map around the Gestral Village. Farming them is very possible, even if the drop rates are so low that you really should only bother in an emergency. On the other hand, you may end up with enough Recoats that you don’t even need to bother buying them from merchants - it only takes 10x Recoats to reset your entire party, and you should easily get twice that many by the end of the game.
