Lune is the ‘magic-user’ of Clair Obscur, and has access to five types of magic: Fire, Ice, Lightning, Earth, and Light. She has a unique mechanic that rewards her with elemental stains that increase a spell’s efficiency when consumed. Read on to find out how to play Lune, and what her best skills and weapons are.

Lune’s Playstyle - Elemental Stain¶
As we briefly mentioned above, Lune can use the power of the elements to damage her foes or heal her allies. Every time you use a spell, it will add an Elemental Stain to her gauge, which is located on the right side of the screen.
Each spell will tell you that it can be enhanced by telling you that the spell will be enhanced when consuming the various stains listed beneath the spell you want to bolster. Each spell will have different requirements, so you’ll need to read the spell description before using it.
There are five types of Stains:
-
Ice:
-
Fire:
-
Lightning:
-
Earth:
-
Light:
In general, the lowest type of spell will give you an elemental stain of that element. For example, Immolation will give you one Fire Stain, and Earth Rising will give you one Earth Stain. Ice Lance will give you a Water and Light Stain, and Electrify will give you two Lightning Stains. Each time you use these spells, a Stain will be added to your gauge on the right to a maximum of four Stains.
(1 of 2) Your Elemental Stain Gauge appears on the right side of the screen.
Your Elemental Stain Gauge appears on the right side of the screen. (left), In the top-right of the skill is what Stains you’ll add to the gauge. At the bottom, you’ll find the Stains to consume to enhance the skill. (right)
If you take a look at the bottom part of the description, you’ll see that each spell consumes a Stain (or Stains) to give you an effect. Most will increase the damage you do with the spell, but some will increase the duration of spells that last multiple turns, or even reduce the AP cost of them. So, when you play as Lune, you will want to use the spell that the enemy is weak to, while also trying to build your Stain Gauge to increase the damage that you do.
Later on, you’ll unlock a spell that uniquely benefits from a specific set of Stains. For example, Elemental Genesis is Lune’s most powerful spell that deals extreme damage to all enemies, and it has eight hits. Unfortunately, to cast this, you will need to have a Lightning, Earth, Fire, and Ice Stain before you can cast it. Lune is all about creating Elemental Stains to consume to bolster her other spells.

Lune’s Skill Tree is separated by groups of elements. These are Healing, Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Earth.
Best Lune Skills¶
Due to the nature of Lune’s playstyle, it’s difficult to pick her best skills as it depends on how you want to use her. If you’re playing her as a healer, then Revitalization and Rebirth are fantastic. Focusing on Break (Stun) damage? Then Earth skills, such as Crustal Crush and Terraquake, are what you’re looking for. However, Burns are the best status effect in the game as it’ll deal a huge chunk of damage every turn that increases with more stacks, and it’ll hit every enemy, including bosses.
Healing isn’t really necessary in Clair Obscur because you will be either dodging or parrying the enemy attacks, and if you do get hit, you have Healing Tints available. There are some boss fights where having them will make the battle easier, but like we said, you shouldn’t be getting hit a lot. Earth’s Break damage is the second best, as there are enemies where Break is invaluable (Bourgeons/Mimes), so we recommend having one or two of these in your deck.
Lightning is great for Critical Hit builds due to most skills hitting a second time. Finally, Ice skills give the enemy
Slow, which slightly delays the enemy’s turn. This is less useful than the other elements, but it still has its place.
(1 of 2) Each time you use a skill, you’ll gain an Elemental Stain.
Each time you use a skill, you’ll gain an Elemental Stain. (left), Using the same skill again will result in the same outcome, giving us two Fire Stains. Build up the Stains to empower your other skills. (right)
Finally, if you want to focus on exploiting her Elemental Stain mechanic (which you should), you’ll want a mixture of spells to generate the respective Stain to enhance the skill you want to empower. When you have four Elemental Stains, you can use Mayhem for a devastating 4-hit attack that deals the element damage corresponding to the Stain. Near the end-game, you’ll want to set up Elemental Genesis, which is your big, powerful spell, but that requires you to have one Stain for each element, excluding Light.
For 80-90% of the game, multi-hit attacks are more powerful as you are capped at 9,999 damage per hit. However, in the final Act, you’ll unlock a Picto that allows you to go past that, making it one of the best extreme damage-dealing skills.
Wildfire¶
Wildfire can be obtained early for a mere 2 skill points. This does medium Fire damage to all enemies, applying 3 Burn. Although it doesn’t sound like much, this skill is always useful, even at the end of the game, due to
Burns being so powerful. Add the fact that it only costs you 4 AP, you can pretty much use it every turn, and the
Burn will stack up, increasing the damage. There are more powerful skills out there, but this will be a staple from the beginning to the end.
(1 of 2) Wildfire will set all enemies ablaze, giving them the Burns debuff.
Wildfire will set all enemies ablaze, giving them the Burns debuff. (left), Mayhem will cast four consecutive attacks based on what Stains are on the Gauge. (right)
Mayhem¶
Mayhem allows you to use all your Stains at the same time, dealing four hits. Each hit will deal damage corresponding to the Stain. For example, if you had four Fire Stains, Mayhem will do four Fire attacks while also dealing Break damage with each hit. Furthermore, this will only cost you 3 AP, which means it is one of the best damage skills per AP for Lune.
Thermal Transfer¶
Thermal Transfer is an interesting spell as it doesn’t deal the most damage, but it will give you 4 AP back if the enemy is Burning, which they should be if you use Wildfire a lot. This will give you an Ice Stain too, and if you have two Earth Stains on your gauge, you’ll get another turn straight after! Another reason for this being a great skill is that it’ll only cost you 2 AP, which is useful when you don’t have any AP for better skills.
Crustal Crush¶
Before you break the single hit damage cap, Crustal Crush is one of the hardest-hitting skills that Lune has. It does high Earth damage and hits five times. Depending on how you built Lune, this can easily deal upwards of 50k damage in the latter stages of the game while dealing Break damage on top. If you consume two Earth Stains beforehand, you can add an extra 10-20K damage on top. Despite its high damage potential, it only costs you 6 AP.
(1 of 2) Crustal Crush hits the enemy five times, causing Break with each hit.
Crustal Crush hits the enemy five times, causing Break with each hit. (left), Typhoon is a unique skill that heals the party and damages the enemy at the start of each turn. (right)
Typhoon¶
Typhoon is a skill that will be cast at the beginning of each turn. It deals respectable Ice damage to all enemies while healing your party. This lasts for 3 turns that can be extended to 5 if you consume two Earth Stains beforehand. Its only downside is it’ll cost you 8 AP, but it’s worth using at the beginning of a boss fight as you’ll get passive damage and healing for at least 3 turns.
Elemental Genesis¶
It wouldn’t be a Best Skill page without her hardest-hitting skill. This powerful attack does Extreme damage to ALL enemies, and it is EIGHT hits. You’d expect this to cost a lot of AP, right? Well, you’d be wrong, as it only costs 4 AP.
So, what’s the catch? The catch is, you need to set up your Stains first so you have one of each element, excluding Light, on your gauge before you can use it, meaning it’ll take you a few turns before you can use it. The other catch is, each attack is a random element, which can be a problem if you’re fighting an enemy that absorbs an element. Still, it is a great skill if you don’t mind setting it up.
Best Weapons for Lune¶
Weapon 1 | Weapon 2 |
---|---|
Scaverim | Lighterim |
Selecting the best weapon is subjective as it all depends on how you’re playing Lune (or any character for that matter), but as we think Fire and Burns is what she does best, we’ll stick with that. For that reason, Lighterim is our pick for her best weapon. At level 4, it will reduce the cost of all Fire Skills by 1 AP. Once you reach rank 10, your Fire Skills will deal an additional 20% damage.
Finally, at level 20, you will start the battle with one Ice Stain, which is what most of the Fire Skills use to consume to increase their damage further. Its only downside is it scales from Agility and Defense, and we think Defense is a relatively useless attribute in the game.
Scaverim is arguably the best weapon for Lune, but you won’t get this until later. Lighterim is good for now.
Next up is Scaverim. What makes this weapon so good is that it has a 50% chance to create a Dark Stain, which is something you can’t usually do. Consuming Dark Stains will increase your skills’ damage by 50% and your Base Attack damage by 200%. Finally, at level 20, consuming 4 Dark Stains will increase your overall damage by 300%.
We recommend using Lighterim until you can get Scaverim, and then switch over, as Scaverim is the strongest weapon for Lune in terms of pure damage. That’s not to say the other weapons are bad; in fact, some of them are great depending on how you play Lune, but if damage is what you’re looking for, then we recommend Scaverim.
Who is Lune’s Voice Actress?¶
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 went all out with the voice talent, which includes none other than Charlie Cox from Marvel fame! Lune’s voice actress is Kirsty Rider, who has appeared in numerous television shows, including the Netflix Original: The Sandman. Her other roles include, but are not limited to, Call the Midwife, Space Pirates, and the martial arts video game, Sifu.
