Over the course of the expedition, the expeditioners will forms bonds with each other as they triumph against the overwhelming odds against which they’re pitted. Should these bonds grow strong enough, you may obtain a variety of boons, including new outfits, gradient attacks and companion quests to complete. This page will cover every relationship in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, including when you can unlock them, rank them up and what rewards they yield.

Page Breakdown

(1 of 3) Talk to your companions in camp after every story dungeon,

Unlocking and Improving Relationships

After "Verso" iconVerso joins the party at the end of Act 1, he’ll be able to start building relationships with the rest of the expeditioners, and it’s through this lens that these relationships are contextualized. That said, Verso can’t actually start forming relationships with the other characters until after you’ve cleared the "Forgotten Battlefield" iconForgotten Battlefield - the first story dungeon in Act 2.

Once you’ve cleared said dungeon you’ll be back in camp, where you can talk to your companions, as normal. Talk to them and you’ll get a prompt asking you if you wish to spend time with them. Accept and you’ll have a relationship chat, which, provided you don’t say anything disastrously wrong, will usually end with your relationship ranking up. It’s a good idea to visit the expedition flag at your camp to trigger an autosave before these relationship chats just in case - it’d be a shame if you missed out achievements/trophies because you picked a dialog option causing a relationship to stall!

Other than that, relationships are pretty straight-forward: complete a story dungeon and afterwards when you’re back at camp talk to everybody and if there’s a relationship chat available, see it through to rank up. Esquie, "Lune" iconLune, "Maelle" iconMaelle, "Monoco" iconMonoco and "Sciel" iconSciel can all reach relationship rank 7, although it’ll take a good bit of story progress to see this out - nobody will max out before Act 3 starts up. Once you’ve ranked up a few times, you may have to do more than merely chat; for one rank up Monoco will request a duel, and many characters will have some quest involving combat to go from rank 5 to rank 6.

Below you’ll find descriptions of how to rank up each character’s relationship:

Esquie’s relationship is relatively straight-forward, save for a one-on-one encounter with Francois at rank 6.

Esquie Relationship

Esquie’s got one of the least demanding relationships in the game, possibly second only to Sciel. You’ll gain a vast majority of rank ups with him after Old Lumiere, after which you can finish up once you’re at camp in Act 3. Unlike other relationships, ranking up with Esquie unlocks Gradient Attacks for Verso, instead of the other character. The only bit of complication in this relationship is at rank 6 - make sure you have Verso prepared before you start this one, as it’ll take you into a fight against Francois. Francois isn’t too hard, but it’s a solo battle, so you have to rely on whatever power Verso himself has, and if you’ve been neglecting him, you may have trouble, as Francois can hit for well over 1,000 damage. Victory will earn you Esquie’s final stone, Urrie, which allows him to finally dive underwater and collect treasure at dive spots on the world map.

To max out your relationship with Lune, you’ll have to defeat a boss in the Sirene’s Dress dungeon and find some expedition journals.

Lune Relationship

Talk with Lune at camp after every major story dungeon in Act 2 and by Act 3 you should be at rank 5. After the initial camp at the start of Act 3, return to camp again and talk to Lune and she’ll make a personal request. You’ll need to travel to the Sirene’s Dress dungeon and defeat a boss to advance to rank 6, but you’ll gain some journal entries along the way. Unlike some relationship battles, you do not have to use either Lune or Verso in combat to defeat her relationship boss, which should make this a pretty easy relationship to max out.

Be honest with Maelle and clear The Reacher dungeon to max out her relationship rank - make sure she’s leveled and equipped, as she has to defeat a boss solo at the end!

Maelle Relationship

Maelle’s relationship ranks are pretty standard - talk to her after story dungeons in Act 2 and you’ll hit rank 5 by Act 3. Once you get to Act 3, however, she’ll diverge a bit - talk to her and she’ll ask you for a favor, which will require you to clear "The Reacher" iconThe Reacher dungeon. Unlike most relationship fights/dungeons, this is not an isolated boss battle, but a full, proper dungeon. Enemy encounters, loot pickups, optional enemies, all that stuff - it’s probably the dungeon you should complete immediately after reaching Act 3, progression-wise. At the top, Maelle will have to fight a solo boss, so if she’s not leveled up and properly equipped, you’ll need to see to that before you can complete this dungeon and rank up.

Monoco’s relationship is the most belligerent, as you’ll have to defeat Monoco in a duel and later team up with the gestral to defeat a boss.

Monoco Relationship

Monoco’s relationship is a bit weird, which may be expected of a gestral who joins later than everybody else. He’ll only reach rank 4 by the start of Act 3, but the rules are generally the same - talk to him after each story dungeon to keep ranking up, and once Act 3 starts you can take care of the last three ranks in succession. Monoco is unusually belligerent, requiring two combat encounters to fully rank up. The first is at rank 3, where he’ll duel Verso one-on-one - Monoco isn’t very strong, but he’s rather durable, and you’ll get some nice rewards ("Recoat" iconRecoat, "Chroma Catalyst" iconChroma Catalysts and a lot of XP) for beating him, not to mention two hairstyles. Next is rank 6, where you’ll have to defeat a boss with just Verso and Monoco in your party. All told, this may be the hardest relationship fight there is, and trying to get some Act 3 Pictos and Lv20+ weapons for Verso and Monoco isn’t the worst idea.

The most straight-forward relationship in the game, no encounter necessary. The only thing particularly noteworthy about the relationship with Sciel is that you get some swimsuits out of it.

Sciel Relationship

The easiest relationship in the game, Sciel follows the standard template (talk to her after every story dungeon to rank up) and has no combat encounters. As long as you avoid saying the wrong thing, you should be fine… so be sure to save before talking to her, just in case!

Sciel Relationship Ranks

Rank Availability Reward
1 After clearing the "Forgotten Battlefield" iconForgotten Battlefield
2 After clearing Old Lumiere
3 After clearing Old Lumiere
4 After the first Axon Unlocks Gradient Attack: "Doom" iconDoom
5 After the second Axon
6 Start of Act 3 Record: "Sciel" iconSciel, Swimsuits for "Sciel" iconSciel and "Verso" iconVerso
7 Anytime after Rank 6 Gradient Attack: "End Slice" iconEnd Slice

As your relationship with Lune and Sciel approach rank 4, you may get the chance to kindle a romance.

Lune and Sciel Romances

"Gustave" iconGustave may be brooding over his lost (ex) lover, Maelle is a teenager and Monoco… well, the less thought about that the better. Those exclusions aside, romance is still possible during this foolhardy expedition. As you raise Verso’s relationship ranks with Sciel and Lune, the opportunity for romance may appear. This isn’t an involved mechanic - reciprocate the fliration and you’ll enter into a romance. Aside from a black screen and a bit of commentary from your romantic interest and your companions, not much comes from this, but keep in mind that you can only romance one character per playthrough. If you, say, talk to Sciel first and respond to her advances, you simply won’t get the option with Lune. Be mindful of this when your relationships approach rank 4 and respond appropriately.
