The last member of the party in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is Monoco. Monoco is a Gestral who will join the party in Act 2 at the aptly named Monoco’s Station. Monoco wields a staff-like weapon that allows him to shapeshift with the help of Nevron’s feet to use their attacks against them, similar to a Blue Mage in Final Fantasy games. Read on to find out how to play Monoco, what the best weapons are, and what skills you should be using.

Monoco is the final party member to join you.

Monoco’s Playstyle - Bestial Wheel

Monoco is a unique character where you’ll obtain Nevron feet by defeating a specific Nevron for their skill. You can see which Nevron has a skill in battle as it will have this iconT_UI_Icon_MonocoFootCapture.pngby its name. Once unlocked, these can be placed on the skill bar and used in battle.

Each skill will have one of five masks attached to it, and if the mask on the Bestial Wheel matches the mask attached to the skill, the skill will be enhanced, either dealing more damage or enhancing its effects. Note that the Almighty mask will enhance all skills, but there are skills with an Almighty mask.

These masks are:

  • HeavyT_UI_MonocoMask_HEAVY.png

  • CasterT_UI_MonocoMask_CASTER.png

  • AgileT_UI_MonocoMask_AGILE.png

  • AlmightyT_UI_MonocoMask_ALMIGHTY.png

Every time you use a skill, the Bestial Wheel (on the right of the screen), will rotate to the next mask on the wheel. The amount the wheel turns is indicated by the number next to the skill, on the right. Some weapons will change the order of the wheel by parrying or reversing the order of the wheel so it’ll go anti-clockwise instead of clockwise. Furthermore, some will even allow you to start the battle on a particular mask.

When going into battle with Monoco, the Bestial Wheel will start on a specific mask. Ideally, you’ll use the skill that matches the mask, but due to being limited to six skills, you may have to use any skill on any mask depending on what skills you’ve equipped. There’s no penalty for this, but you will lose out on a significant portion of extra damage from the correct mask.

(1 of 2) There are five types of Masks on the Bestial Wheel. Balanced, Heavy, Almighty, Caster, and Agile.

Monoco’s Best Skills

Due to you being limited to six skills, we’ll give you two of each skill for each mask. All his skills are good, and it depends on how you want to play Monoco. As always, we will aim to give you the skills that deal the most damage, unless the skill offers something too good to pass up.

Balanced Mask - Chalier Combo

This is the one you’ll get when Monoco joins the party, and it’s still good at end-game. It hits six times, dealing high single-target Physical damage. Multi-hit attacks are generally the way to go until you unlock the damage cap in the final act. So, this hitting for six attacks is strong. Its only downside is its 7 AP, which is quite high, especially when you first get Monoco.

Balanced Mask - Chevaliere Ice / Danseuse Waltz

Both of these skills are 3-hit, high-damage attacks. The former is an ice attack on all enemies, while the latter is a fire attack on a single target. Note that Chevaliere Ice will apply Slow on the enemies, and Danseuse Waltz will deal more damage if the enemy is burning. Both of these are great skills, but we’d choose Chevaliere Ice due to it being 2 AP less than Danseuse Waltz unless you’re burning enemies beforehand with another party member, which is a valid tactic.

Chevaliere Ice can be obtained by defeating the Gold Chevalier, who can be found in Old Lumiere. Return via the northern exit and take the middle path; you’ll eventually fight one of these. Danseuse Waltz can be obtained by defeating a Danseuse also found near the Bourgeon west of Old Lumiere on the World Map.

(1 of 2) Chevaliere Combo is a six-hit attack that gains increased damage when used during a Balanced Mask.

Heavy Mask - Cruler Barrier

This is a fantastic support skill that gives an ally 1-2 shields and 2 AP (must be on a Heavy Mask). Especially later on, due to some enemies dropping your health to 1 HP. Each shield will take one hit on you, regardless of the damage it does, and it can be the difference between failing a battle. Also, who doesn’t like extra AP? This skill can be obtained by defeating the Cruler west of Stone Quarry on the World Map.

Heavy Mask - Grosse Tete Whack

This is one of the better Heavy Mask skills due to dealing high damage to a single target, hitting for five attacks. At the end of the combo, it’ll apply Defenseless for three turns, which increases the damage on it by 25%. This skill can be obtained by defeating the Grosse Tete, who can be found near Coastal Cave on the World Map.

(1 of 2) Grosse Tete Whack has Monoco turn into a giant rock that bounces numerous times.

Agile Mask - Chapelier Slash

Chapelier Slash is a three-hit attack on all enemies, dealing high Physical damage. At the end of the attack, it will mark all enemies, increasing the damage of the next attack on them. It does cost 7 AP, which is a lot, but it’s more than worth its cost. This skill can be obtained by defeating the Chapelier east of the Northern Gestral Beach on the World Map.

Agile Mask - Aberration Light

Aberration Light is a late-game skill that you won’t get until Act 3. It deals high Light damage to all enemies, hitting them two times. Each hit will apply four Burn to each enemy for a total of eight Burns, and if you use it during an Agile Mask, it will do an additional two Burns per hit for a total of twelve.

This skill can be obtained by defeating the Chromatic Aberration, which can be found northwest of Dark Shores on the World Map. You will need Esquie’s Flying ability to reach this area.

Caster Mask - Potier Energy

Potier Energy is a support skill that gives each party member 1-3 AP, which includes Monoco. If this is used during a Caster Mask, you’ll gain an additional AP. This skill can be obtained by defeating the Potier, who can be found northwest of the Boat Graveyard on the World Map.

Caster Mask - Creation Void

Creation Void is another late-game skill that you can only get in Act 3. It deals extreme Void damage to random enemies for a total of three hits. If the random hits attack the same enemy, it will deal increased damage. This skill can be obtained by defeating Creation, who can be found in the Renoir’s Drafts area.

Sakapatate Fire will transform Monoco into the Ultimate Sakapatate, and unleash three volleys of cannon fire at the enemy.

Almighty Mask - Sakapatate Fire

Sakapatate Fire deals extreme fire damage to all enemies, hitting the enemy three times. Each hit will apply three Burns. This will deal even more damage on an Almighty Mask. You can obtain the skill by defeating the Ultimate Sakapatate in the Inside the Monolith area, near the Tainted Sanctuary Flag.

Almighty Mask - Lampmaster Light / Duallist Storm

Both of these skills are great, and you’ll want to use both of them depending on the enemy/boss. If you’re fighting an enemy that has a lot of health, pick Lampmaster Light, however, if the enemy will go down a bit quicker, pick Duallist Storm.

The former skill does Light damage to all enemies for one hit. The damage of this skill will increase each time you cast it, meaning if you use it three or four times on the same enemy, it will deal more damage than Duallist Storm. The latter skill deals extreme Void damage to a single target, hitting for four attacks. Duallist Storm can also Break the enemy.

Both of these will deal more damage on an Almighty Mask. Lampmaster Light can be obtained by defeating the Lampmaster in the Flying Manor dungeon, while Duallist Storm can be obtained by defeating the Duallist, also in the same dungeon.

That’s it for Monoco’s best skills. If you want to know where to find these, or any of Monoco’s skills, check out our All Monoco Skill Location Guide!

Monoco’s Best Weapons

Weapon 1 Weapon 2 Weapon 3
Nusaro Fragaro Monocaro

Nusaro is one of the best weapons for Monoco purely for its damage output. At max level, it has the highest damage. This does not count the traits of the weapon, which are good anyway. Another great weapon for the same reason as Nusaro is Fragaro.

Finally, you have the weapon that Monoco joins the party with, Monocaro. The reason why this weapon is so good is that it allows you to start the battle in Balanced Mask, gives you Powerful for three turns in Balanced Mode, and 30% Critical Hit damage when in Balanced Mode.

On top of that, the majority of the Balanced Mask skills are good, making this weapon even better. The notable traits from the other weapons are the 30% extra skill damage on upgraded skills, the extra 1 AP when the Mask changes with the Nusaro, and the 100% Critical Chance while in the Almighty Mask for the Fragaro.

Who is Monoco’s Voice Actor?

By now, it’s no surprise that the voice talent in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is star-studded, and Monoco is no different. Rich Keeble voices Monoco, who is credited for but not limited to many television shows such as: Rivals, Good Omens, The Emily Atack Show, and The Change. He has also voiced characters in other videogames such as New World: Aeternum, Wuthering Waves, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and many more.
