Couldn't you also just rejigger Shadowheart's spells and get Command? Then use Command to get Zhalk to drop his sword? It's 50/50 so yeah, save scumming is likely but... then you grab the sword and just get on outta there. I get the experience is nice, but what a slog for the sword which is why you are doing it anyway, right?
